What did he see?

He saw a most wonderful sight. Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees. In every tree that he could see there was a little child. And the trees were so glad to have the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms, and were waving their arms gently above the children's heads. The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing.

Ante sus ojos apareció una vista extraordinaria. Por un pequeño hueco en el muro los niños se habían deslizado dentro del jardín y habían trepado a los árboles. En cada árbol que alcanzaba a ver había un niño sentado en una rama. Y los árboles estaban tan contentos con su regreso que se habían cubierto de flores y agitaban sus ramas por sobre las cabezas de los niños. El jardín se llenó de pájaros que piaban jubilosamente. Las flores se asomaban entre la hierba verde y reían.

 It was a lovely scene, only in one corner it was still winter. It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it was standing a little boy. He was so small that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly. The poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind was blowing and roaring above it. "Climb up! little boy," said the Tree, and it bent its branches down as low as it could; but the boy was too tiny.

Era una escena encantadora, sólo en un rincón seguía siendo invierno. Era el lugar más apartado del jardín y allí había un niñito. Era tan pequeño que no podía alcanzar las ramas del árbol y caminaba a su alrededor llorando amargamente. El pobre árbol seguía cubierto de nieve y escarcha y el viento del norte sacudía su copa y rugía. -¡Trepa, niñito! –rogaba el árbol mientras tendía sus ramas hacia él, pero el niño era demasiado pequeño.

And the Giant's heart melted as he looked out. "How selfish I have been!" he said; "now I know why the Spring would not come here. I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children's playground for ever and ever." He was really very sorry for what he had done.

El gigante sintió que su corazón se derretía. -¡Qué egoísta he sido! –exclamó-. Ahora sé por qué la primavera no venia aquí. Subiré a ese pobre niñito hasta la copa del árbol y luego derribaré el muro. Mi jardín será el parque de los niños para siempre. Estaba sinceramente apenado por lo que había hecho.

So he crept downstairs and opened the front door quite softly, and went out into the garden. But when the children saw him they were so frightened that they all ran away, and the garden became winter again. Only the little boy did not run, for his eyes were so full of tears that he did not see the Giant coming.

Entonces bajó corriendo las escaleras, abrió la puerta del frente sin hacer ruido y salió al jardín. Cuando los niños lo vieron, se asustaron tanto que huyeron y el invierno volvió a adueñarse del jardín. Sólo el niño más pequeño permaneció allí porque tenía los ojitos tan llenos de lágrimas que no vio acercarse al gigante.

And the Giant stole up behind him and took him gently in his hand, and put him up into the tree. And the tree broke at once into blossom, and the birds came and sang on it, and the little boy stretched out his two arms and flung them round the Giant's neck, and kissed him. And the other children, when they saw that the Giant was not wicked any longer, came running back, and with them came the Spring.

El gigante se deslizó por detrás del niño, lo alzó suavemente y lo sentó en el árbol. En un instante, el árbol se cubrió de flores y los pájaros vinieron a cantar en sus ramas. El niño extendió los bracitos, rodeó con ellos el cuello del gigante y le dio un beso. Y cuando los otros niños vieron que el gigante ya no quería hacerles daño volvieron corriendo y con ellos regresó la primavera.

"It is your garden now, little children," said the Giant, and he took a great axe and knocked down the wall. And when the people were going to market at twelve o'clock they found the Giant playing with the children in the most beautiful garden they had ever seen.

-Desde ahora este jardín es para ustedes, niños –les dijo el gigante. Luego tomó un hacha enorme y derribó el muro. Y al mediodía, cuando los habitantes del pueblo se dirigían al mercado, vieron que el gigante jugaba con los niños en el jardín más bello que jamás habían imaginado.

All day long they played, and in the evening they came to the Giant to bid him good-bye.

Jugaron todo el día y al atardecer los niños se despidieron del gigante.

"But where is your little companion?" he said: "the boy I put into the tree." The Giant loved him the best because he had kissed him.

-¿Y dónde está su compañerito, el niño a quien ayudé a subir al árbol? –les preguntó el gigante. Le había cobrado cariño porque era el único que le había dado un beso.

"We don't know," answered the children; "he has gone away."

-No sabemos –respondieron los niños-. Ya se fue.

"You must tell him to be sure and come here to-morrow," said the Giant. But the children said that they did not know where he lived, and had never seen him before; and the Giant felt very sad.

-Deben decirle que no olvide venir mañana –recomendó el gigante, pero los niños le dijeron que no sabían donde vivía y que nunca lo habían visto antes. Y el gigante se quedó muy triste.

Every afternoon, when school was over, the children came and played with the Giant. But the little boy whom the Giant loved was never seen again. The Giant was very kind to all the children, yet he longed for his first little friend, and often spoke of him. "How I would like to see him!" he used to say.

Todas las tardes, cuando terminaban las clases, los niños iban a jugar con el gigante. Pero el niñito a quien el gigante quería nunca volvió. Aunque era muy amable con todos, el gigante extrañaba a su primer amiguito y siempre hablaba de él. -¡Cómo quisiera volver a verlo! –solía decir.

Years went over, and the Giant grew very old and feeble. He could not play about any more, so he sat in a huge armchair, and watched the children at their games, and admired his garden. "I have many beautiful flowers," he said; "but the children are the most beautiful flowers of all."

Pasaron los años y el gigante se volvió viejo y débil. Ya no podía jugar, pero se sentaba en un gran sillón y contemplaba los juegos de los niños mientras admiraba su jardín. -Tengo muchas flores bellas –decía-, pero los niños son las flores más bellas que existen.

One winter morning he looked out of his window as he was dressing. He did not hate the Winter now, for he knew that it was merely the Spring asleep, and that the flowers were resting.

Una mañana de invierno, el gigante miró por la ventana mientras se vestía. Ya no odiaba al invierno porque sabía que durante ese tiempo la primavera dormía y las flores descansaban.

Suddenly he rubbed his eyes in wonder, and looked and looked. It certainly was a marvellous sight. In the farthest corner of the garden was a tree quite covered with lovely white blossoms. Its branches were all golden, and silver fruit hung down from them, and underneath it stood the little boy he had loved.

De pronto, se frotó los ojos sorprendido y volvió a mirar una y otra vez. La vista era realmente maravillosa. En el rincón más apartado del jardín había un árbol cubierto de encantadores pimpollos blancos. De sus ramas de oro pendían frutos plateados. Y bajo el árbol se encontraba el niñito a quien quería tanto.

Downstairs ran the Giant in great joy, and out into the garden. He hastened across the grass, and came near to the child. And when he came quite close his face grew red with anger, and he said, "Who hath dared to wound thee?" For on the palms of the child's hands were the prints of two nails, and the prints of two nails were on the little feet.

Lleno de dicha, el gigante bajó corriendo las escaleras y salió al jardín. Cruzó el terreno precipitadamente para ir al encuentro del niño. Y cuando estuvo a su lado, la cara se le puso roja de furia. -¿Quién se ha atrevido a lastimarte? –preguntó. En las palmas de las manos del niño se veían las marcas de dos clavos y las marcas de dos clavos aparecían en sus piecitos.

"Who hath dared to wound thee?" cried the Giant; "tell me, that I may take my big sword and slay him."

-¿Quién se ha atrevido a lastimarte? –gritó el gigante-. Dímelo y lo atravesaré con mi enorme espada.

"Nay!" answered the child; "but these are the wounds of Love."

-¡No! –respondió el niño-. Estas son las heridas del Amor.

"Who art thou?" said the Giant, and a strange awe fell on him, and he knelt before the little child.

-¿Quién eres? –preguntó el gigante. Y se sintió invadido por un extraño temor que lo impulsó a caer de rodillas.

And the child smiled on the Giant, and said to him, "You let me play once in your garden, to-day you shall come with me to my garden, which is Paradise."

El niñito sonrió al gigante y le dijo: -Una vez me permitiste jugar en tu jardín. Hoy vendrás conmigo a mi jardín, que es el Paraíso. 

And when the children ran in that afternoon, they found the Giant lying dead under the tree, all covered with white blossoms.

Y esa tarde, cuando llegaron los niños, encontraron al gigante muerto bajo el árbol, todo cubierto de flores blancas.
